Top 25 Greatest Horror Movies

There are few more subjective categories than the Top 25 Greatest Horror Movies. In thinking about my own top 25, and trying to stay objective, I found myself struggling with movies that scared the hell out of me, movies that thrilled me with original horror and even films so disturbing I would never watch them again. Of the ones that were truly great, some gave me great laughs and some made me jump in my seat. One even made me crawl under my seat as a child. Some were so horribly real that they caused me nightmares and heart palpitations. The ones that didn’t will be on someone else’s list.
No. 25: Zombieland
The newest horror film on the list, Zombieland is funny far more than scary, but a great film for all that. This is a megamovie with one great cameo and 90+ minutes of great action. The originality, disgusting violence and unlikely characters make Zombieland one of the best funny scary movies as well. You might want to sneak in some Twinkies, I so wanted one by the end of the film. Take a pen, too. You might want to write down the Zombieland rules before you leave. Ya’ never know. Oh, and start up the cardio, these Zombies are quick.

No. 24: The Fly (1958)
No horror list would be complete were there not a Vincent Price film present and my all-time favorite freak out film featuring Price is The Fly. Not the gimmicky Jeff Goldblum film, mind you, but the raw and frightening representation made by Price. Nobody in film today sells crazy quietly, sanely and maddeningly slow like Vincent Price did. There are the machines. There are always machines with mad scientists, but the focus in the first film is all on Francois Delambre (Price) and his work is brilliant. Delambre is carefully, strategically working to solve the problem of wireless transportation. Using a teleportation device to transport living tissue, something goes horribly, demonstrably wrong. Part of a fly’s body end up replacing parts of Delambre’s. Should that not be horror enough, at the end of the movie, in the final scene, the screen enlarges and enlarges and enlarges until we see Francois Delambre’s head on a fly’s body – screaming "help me" as a spider slowly creeps toward him. I get chills even today.

No. 23: The Descent
A modern take on the genre, The Descent is, as advertised, pure horror. There are no deep psychological plots, no fancy, well dressed monsters and no well spoken gentlemen with strangely sharp teeth. There is only something very terrifying deep beneath the earth waiting for (relatively) innocent climbers. The Descent has some of the most starkly frightening moments in film and, set in almost total darkness, some truly terrifying, monstrous confrontations. If you want a good scare or an excuse to grab your significant other, I heartily recommend Descent.

No. 22: Scream
Now, for those of you looking for nubile virgin slashing, hey, here’s the film. I thoroughly loved the tongue in cheek, yet serious, butchery of this one. Scream is all fun, with a little horror, slashing and a few life lessons – what not to do when surrounded by murderous psychos. With David Arquette, Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and Matthew Lillard all contributing, Scream has some great moments, violence, some predictable and some unpredictable, and one of the great serial killer characters of any film. More importantly, Scream avoids the slasher title by focusing on a good story and great characters, not just on blood and gore. Oh, and one more thing. I hate films where there is no hope and there is never a point in Scream (or its sequels) where the characters need to give up. Scream is kind of a farce, but not so much that it becomes a Scary Movie joke. It's a must see for all horror fans.

One of my favorite "horror" series is I Know What You Did Last Summer. I wouldn't consider them a "great" franchise, but I I can't help but watch them. Also, Black Sheep deserves a honorable mention. lol

Interesting list Craig. I am not a huge horror fan so I have only seen like 5 movies on the list.
I am curious have you seen a small film titled High Tension? I saw it a few years ago and I thought it was really good. Its in Russian but its definitely worth a watch.
Also another film I would recommend is Let the Right One In. I believe its also in a foreign language but I forget which language. It came out last year and it was really good.
If you have seen them let me know what you think.

From all the research I did preparing the list I did run into both of those films, but they tend to be more for the conniseur of horror. I'm not so much a fan of the High Tension type of film for the obvious reasons. I don't like "man's inhumanity to man" type films for their concentration on the evil that man do. I believe man is basically a good creature with always a few bad apples so I avoided High Tension (there are so many other films to see.
I do want to see Let the right one in though...sounds like one I will really enjoy. Thanks for bring both to my attention.

Some people say that "Paranormal Activity" is even scarier than The Exorcist... Have you seen it Craig? Is it all it is hyped up to be? It's still not showing in my country but I can't wait.
I also wish you had mentioned "Dawn of the Dead" which is THE greatest zombie movie in my opinion, but "Night of the living dead" is pretty close.

I got to see this movie yesterday and I don't know what all the buzz is about. I liked it but I thought it was just above average. There were few good creepy moments but only one that really scared me. And there is a major flaw in the movie which I will not ruin for you but after you see it you will know what I am talking about. I also was very distracted by the main girl who to me looks just like Jenna Fisher AKA Pam from The Office

Luke
Thanks for checking out my top 100 video. I had a very hard time draining my list of over 150 films to 100 best. I could never put them in numerical order.

Went to see Zombieland today and liked it a lot. When I saw the trailer a few months ago I had no intention of watching it because I love Shaun of the Dead so much and I figured why bother.....but I ended up liking it a lot. I still think that Shaun of the Dead is the better of the two films.
I thought that both Woody Harrelson and Jesse Eisenberg were fantastic. I also loved all of the rules that they had to survive.
I usually go to movies at night time but today I went in the day time so I had the entire theater to myself. There were a few scenes that really scared me.....even more than Paranormal Activity.

I love Zombieland and much as I like Shaun of the Dead, I didn't like it as much as Hot Fuzz. I like Zombieland as much as Hot Fuzz so it has to be better than Shaun of the Dead.

So far the reports about Paranormal are awesome and I'm waiting for the exact moment to see it. I'm not sure, but the anticipation is great. I'll let you know when I do, promise.
